Embracing the Next Generation: End of Life for Genius 1 System and App Payment Services

At EO Charging, we are dedicated to ensuring our customers have access to the latest and most efficient electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions. We are announcing important updates regarding the Genius 1 charger and related systems including the App payment and RFID authentication services as part of our commitment to compliance and innovation.

Regulatory Compliance and Service Updates 

Due to the UK Smart Charging Regulations enacted on 01 July 2022, EO Charging can no longer sell or replace EO Genius 1 chargers. Although we were granted an extension to offer replacement units for Genius 1 chargers, this period has now come to an end. We are therefore ceasing the production and servicing of Genius 1 chargers and related services. This is so we can upgrade all our systems and offer solutions that comply with the UK Smart Charging and Public Charge Point regulations.  

A roundup of impacted services and key dates can be found below:

  • Ceasing Production and Servicing of Genius 1 Chargers & EO Hub 1:

    Effective as of today, 01 October 2024, EO Charging will cease offering replacement units for EO Genius 1 and EO Hub 1 units. Existing Genius 1 chargers will continue to operate as "plug and play" devices, allowing you to charge vehicles as usual. The EO Hub 1, if operational, will still manage load (if set up) to protect your electrical supply. However, this capability is not guaranteed nor permanent. Therefore, we recommend upgrading to the latest generation Hub 2 once your warranty expires to ensure optimal performance and protection.

  • Discontinuation of EO App Payment Functionality: 


    From 10 January 2025, our payment functionality and RFID authentication services will be discontinued via the EO App for all Genius 1 devices. During the transition period, users will need to explore alternative payment methods through our partner network, which EO will assist customers with. We will have some exciting updates on payment services in 2025.

  • Sunsetting of EO Cloud 1: 


    As of 10 January 2025, EO Cloud 1 will be phased out in favour of our new OCPP platform, EO Cloud 2. Existing EO Cloud 1 customers will be provided with a personalised upgrade path to transition to Cloud 2, ensuring access to our most up-to-date software services.

Understanding the UK Smart Charging Regulations: 

The Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations introduced in July 2022 ensure that all EV charge points sold in Great Britain have smart functionality. This allows for charging during periods of low grid demand or when more renewable electricity is available. The regulations also ensure that charge points meet specific device-level requirements for access, security, and consumer information.

Understanding the Public Charge Point Regulations 

As of 24 November 2023, new Public Charge Point Regulations were introduced. The regulations focus on four key areas of the consumer experience including easily locating charge points, ease of payment across public charge points, maintenance of charge points and the ability to compare prices across charge points. This means that public charge points must display the total cost of a charging session, including connection fees, in pence per kilowatt-hour (p/kWh) on public charge points or through separate devices such as EV driver apps.
