Go-Ahead Merton Bus Depot Electrification with Overnight Charging

01. Project Scope

The Go- Ahead Group (Go-Ahead) is the largest bus operator in London. They are on a mission to have net zero carbon business by 2045 and a critical element is to operate a zero-emission bus fleet by 2035.

Since 2021, EO Charging has been a key partner in The Go-Ahead Group's journey towards electrifying its fleet across London and the UK.

One of the projects assigned was to provide a full turnkey solution for the electrification of Go-Ahead London Merton Bus Garage for its 124 electric bus fleet. EO Charging were responsible for the design, installation and ongoing operations and maintenance of the new charge infrastructure. The bus depot strategically implemented EO's energy management solution to optimise overnight charging and capitalise on off-peak charging tariffs, completing the project across four meticulously planned phases.

02. Project Summary

EO provided full turnkey solution for the electrification of Merton’s bus garage. The project work was completed over four key phases:

Phase 1:

  • Designed and built eBus charging infrastructure.

  • Orchestrated the origination and specification of a new UK Power Networks (UKPN) power connection, managing project coordination with UKPN.

  • Installed 9x Phihong AP63 2x44kW AC chargers.

Phase 2:

  • Upgraded power capacity to 2mVa and installed transformers.

  • Expanded charging capability with 31x Phihong AP63 2x 44kW AC chargers.

Phase 3:

  • Implemented 2x 300kW power cabinets and 4x 150kW DC satellite chargers.

  • Commissioned and connected charge points to the Charge Point Management System (CPMS) and back-office systems using EO’s software, EO Cloud.

Phase 4:

  • Installed 4x 600kW power cabinets, 1x 300kW power cabinet, 18x 150kW DC satellite chargers, and 6x 150kW standalone chargers.

  • Deployed EO Hub, an Energy Management System, to optimise charging schedules and load management

  • Provided on-site training for Go-Ahead London staff.

03. Key Activities Undertaken By EO

  • Managed the entire project lifecycle, including engineering delivery and on-site management.

  • Oversaw commissioning processes for all chargers.

  • Implemented EO Cloud and back-office monitoring for 24/7 operational oversight.

  • Established an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) service agreement to ensure continued high performance.

04. Key Results & Outcomes

The electrification project has delivered significant outcomes for Go-Ahead London Merton Bus Garage:

  • Achieved >99% uptime of the charger network, ensuring continuous availability for the electric bus fleet.

  • Implemented overnight charging strategies and automated load management through EO's Energy Management System (EO Hub), providing precise control over the EV bus fleet's energy consumption and operational readiness.

This comprehensive electrification initiative not only supports Go-Ahead Group's sustainability goals but also enhances operational efficiency and reliability for London's largest bus fleet operator.
